Asplenium trichomanes (Maidenhair Spleenwort)

Common throughout Hutton Roof and loves taking over old lime kilns
just like this one at Clawthorpe, but also found in walls and limestone
 pavements throughout Hutton Roof.

This is a photo of the old lime kiln near Clawthorpe which shows plenty of examples of
this species.  I check it out regular hoping one day to find something out of the ordinary
maybe a hybrid or sub who knows. They seem to romp on especially as you go into the
kiln as though they really enjoy the dark, near damp conditions.

This shows a bunched up area of trichomanes within the old lime kiln relic on the Farleton side.
Here they grow alongside adiantum-nigrum (Black Spleenwort) and ceterach (Rusty Back).
This photo I took on 1st October 2018

This is a photograph showing a full frond which average around 6" in length.
I have always been surprised just how much the pinnae can differ between
one plant and another. Note the black stipe which with the viride (Green Spleenwort)
would have a green stipe.

Taken from the outside of Clawthorpe Lime Kiln on 25th August 2013.
Never did find out about this one, but certainly looks different to the norm !!

Again this specimen looks great and different to the norm and
was taken from the relics of the old lime kiln on the Farleton side.

Rare unusual Asplenium trichomanes (Maidenhair Spleenwort) lengths

Photo: taken on Holme Stinted Pastures on 5th March 2019 (Click over to enlarge)

Showing two large 'Trichomanes' (Maidenhair Spleenwort) fronds which I found today and taken from the same plant (see photos below). I have never seen anything so long. The frond lengths of the top frond (dark frond) is: from Crown to Low pinnae 10 1/2" or (27cm) add extra 2" for stipe. And the bottom frond (light frond) is: from Crown to Low pinnae 8 1/8" or (24 3/4"cm)

These two photos above show the fronds in situ. A limestone pavement with a grike. In the grike is growing a small tree. About 3ft down the gryke you can see a A. Scolopendrium (Harts Tongue fern) and from the surface of the limestone grows a large A. Trichomanes (Maidenhair Spleenwort) with lots of large fronds just like the ones you see above. All the fronds seem large and its possible there could be more even longer. The whole area is showing large amounts of A. ruta-muraria (Common Wall Rue).

I was drawn to these specimens and other nearby specimens because they looked slightly different than the norm, together with this extraordinary length of fronds makes them especially interesting and I have called upon my friend and other experts for their advice. For now I have included a few more photos.

Never had one of these before!! what makes the specimen start diminishing
sizes of pinnae half way down the frond .
This by the way is still last years and as yet no new growth alongside.
