Cystopteris fragilis (Brittle Bladder Fern)

The old lime kilns are fantastic ferny places and the Hutton Roof disused kiln is no exception with good populations of aspleniums of both Trichomanes and probably more interesting for the amount of Cystopteris fragilis and here are a few photos, please note the photo with the croziers.

Cystopteris fragilis (Brittle Bladder fern)

A most beautiful delicate fern that I have found throughout Hutton Roof and Dalton Crags, especially in damp locations. I have found so far at least ten populations of this little beauty.
It frequents areas on the escarpments (not all). I guess this particular species always reminds me of
how I expected (whilst growing up) a fern to be - delicate!

comparisons

Cystopteris fragilis Brittle Bladder Fern versus Asplenium adiantum-nigrum Black Spleenwort

Cystopteris fragilis Brittle Bladder Fern versus Asplenium adiantum-nigrum Black Spleenwort

I guess for me the easiest way to identify the difference is by examining the pinnae and with the Cystopteris (Brittle Bladder) (above left) you note there is a central rib showing throughout each branch of pinnae, whereby on the Asplenium (Black Spleenwort) you do not see this central rib pronounced its more a question of equal small veins coming in from all directions towards the rachis. The opposing examples can be seen clearly in the above photos.
